> DARE To Be You: A systems approach to the early prevention of problem behaviors

> Strengthening Families website

Developed by Jan Miller-Heyl, M.S., the DARE To Be You (DTBY) program targets two-to five-year-old children and their families. DTBY is an intervention aimed at the individual child, the family, the school and the community. Participation in DTBY often leads to an increase in a child's self-worth, empathy, competence, problem solving, social skills and self-management.  Parents develop self-efficacy by learning stress management techniques and more effective child-rearing practices.  This strategy integrates the family and the community through workshops for parents and children, and through training for school staff and community members.  The training involves interactive activities, methods for structuring positive work, play and learning environments; developing positive role models and ways to deal with difficult, "everyday" situations.  Following a set curriculum, parents and children meet together for a meal and an activity prior to their separate workshops.

Evaluation

Research shows that parents increased their self-worth and competence, sense of positive relationships with their children, their family management styles and children were reported to decrease their aggressive and hostile behaviors by parents
